WONDERS RESOURCES:
A Typical Wonders Week

Day 1 - Introduction to the essential question and shared read aloud. Students will also take a spelling pretest and be introduced to the grammar concept for the week.

Day 2 - Introduction to the weekly skills and strategies, including comprehension strategy, comprehension skill, vocabulary strategy, and genre. Students will continue practice with the grammar on spelling/phonics concepts and begin/continue working on a writing assignment.

Day 3-4 - Students read the main story and use the skills and strategies to interpret and understand the story. Grammar, spelling/phonics and writing continue.

Day 5 - Students take the weekly assessment which consists of two "cold-read" passages, 20 multiple-choice questions, and a text-dependent written response.
Note: On days 1-5, students will participate in guided reading groups with Mr. McGinniss and work independently or in a small group on a menu of different activities.

Book Jam:
In order to help foster a love of reading, the students have a continuing assignment to read which can be completed in school or out. Each month there is a suggested genre to increase the variety of text students read.

BOOKS NEED TO BE TEACHER APPROVED BY THE END OF THE FIRST WEEK OF THAT MONTH.

September – Free choice
October – Fiction, Featured Genre: Mystery
November – Nonfiction, Featured Genre: Biography (Inventor or Invention)
December – Fiction
January – Historical Fiction
February – Fiction, Featured Genre: Fantasy/Science Fiction
March – Nonfiction
April – Free Choice
May – Free choice
June - Book Jam Celebration in the gym (bring a beach towel or blanket)
Requirements:

Read throughout the month (even when Book Jam book is completed)

Complete the Book Jam Notecard according to the directions (will be collected)
-
Be prepared to present about your book including a summary (but excluding the solution and resolution of the story)
Students who have met these requirements will be able to participate in our monthly Book Jam where we will have fun talking and sharing about the books we have been reading.
